EOTSC20160201 Halibut anglers can offer input for season dates
Calling all halibut anglers to help set spring season dates for Central Coast
ODFW wants halibut anglers to weigh in on open dates for the 2016 spring all-depth sport halibut fishery in the Central Coast subarea. And like last year, there are three ways to give feedback—attend a public meeting, participate via webinar, or take an online survey.
The Central Oregon Coast Subarea extends from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mt., and includes most Oregon ports except those in the Astoria area, Gold Beach, and Brookings. The seasons for the Columbia River and Southern Oregon Subareas have already been established for this year.
“The sport halibut fishery is popular, so we want to ensure we hear from as many anglers as possible,” said Lynn Mattes, halibut project leader for ODFW.
Participants in the process will help choose the number of spring all-depth “fixed” and “back-up” dates, and the weeks in which those open dates occur.
The public meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the ODFW Newport office, 2040 SE Marine Science Drive. Participants can join the meeting online at https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/620143213, or dial in at 1-(408) 650-3123 Access code: 620-143-213.
Finally, anglers can offer input through an online survey, which will be available on the ODFW halibut webpage from Feb. 2-7, 2016.
For questions, or to provide additional comments without attending the meeting, anglers should contact Lynn Mattes at 541-867-0300 ext. 237 or by e-mail: lynn.mattes@state.or.us or Maggie Sommer at 541-867-0300 ext. 227 or by e-mail: maggie.sommer@state.or.us.

Oregon Shores
Conservation Coalition
P.O. Box 33
Seal Rock, OR 97376
CONTACT: Fawn Custer,
(541) 270-0027, fawn@oregonshores.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
High tides and sea level rise may not be things to celebrate,
but the CoastWatch program is inviting one and all to celebrate the conclusion
of the 2015 King Tide Project, through which volunteer photographers document
these highest tides of the year. Local
co-sponsor of the event will be Washed Ashore.
The party takes place this Friday, Jan. 22, at Bandon’s Harbortown Events Center (325 2nd St., S.E.), beginning at 5:30 p.m. Whether or not you made it out to the
shore to snap the “King Tides,” you are invited to learn more about the
project, view the best of this year’s photos, and get a jump on the 2016
version that will take place next fall.
Speaking to the group will be
Rebecca Flitcroft, a research fish biologist with the U.S. Forest Service. She will be speaking on “Survival in Times of
Change: Climate and Salmon.” She will look at the many challenging
environments through which salmon pass on their migrations, and the ways that
climate change may add to those challenges to survival. Flitcroft’s research focuses on aquatic systems from the headwaters to
the ocean, and she has studied how sea level rise and other climate impacts may
affect estuaries in particular.
There will also be brief talks
on the project and on citizen science, and plenty of time to eat, drink, and
socialize. The event is free and open to
all. Snacks will be provided; beverages
are being donated by Seven Devils Brewery.
Our local partner for this event is the Washed Ashore Project.
For more information, contact
Fawn Custer, CoastWatch volunteer coordinator, (541) 270-0027, fawn@oregonshores.org. Background on the project can also be found

EOTSC20160122 (th) Unity By The Bay - Power of Now
Tolle’s Power of Now Class at
Unity By The Bay
A
new nine-week class is being offered at Unity By The Bay in North Bend, beginning January 23rd, based on the book The Power of
Now by Ekhart Tolle.
Eckhart
Tolle is a contemporary spiritual teacher who is not aligned with any
particular religion or tradition. He writes with the timeless and
uncomplicated clarity of the ancient spiritual masters and imparts a simple yet
profound message, and his message is simple: living in the now is the
truest path to happiness and enlightenment. While this message may
not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice,
and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered
what exactly "living in the now" means.
Foremost,
Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in
concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book,
readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious
of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine
peace and happiness.
This
class will be held on Saturday mornings beginning January 23 and runs through March
26, 10 am until 11:30am. Cost will be on a love-offering basis;
all are welcome. Unity By The Bay is located at 2100 Union Street in North
Bend. For more
information, call 541-751-1633.
