Dennis Toney to be featured Artist

On Friday, November 6, 2015, Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance (CDABA) is pleased to feature Dennis Toney, a photographer, photographic designer, and educator, has taught, studied and photographed in Oregon for 47 years. The event will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Lower Umpqua Hospital.

Born and raised in northeastern Oregon he has taught at Heppner High School, Blue Mountain Community College, the University of Oregon and Reedsport High School

Using 8X10, 4X5, and 35 MM formats, he approaches subjects without preconceived ideas, hopefully with a fresh clear mind. As he studies an object he is drawn closer and closer as he engages the surface. Surfaces reveal to him a new level of “seeing,” a new adventure and a new appreciation for common subjects.

He quotes, “My images are question asking rather than answer giving. I allow the viewer an experience which could hopefully enrich their lives.”

His work has been displayed in both solo and group showings.  His photographs have become part of public art and of art collections and patrons.

Dennis lives with his wife Cindy, his Border Collie Holly and his English Shepherd Hazel, in Reedsport, Oregon.

The South Coast Development Council (SCDC) along with special guests Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA), the Oregon State University-Food Innovation center, and Dream$savers, are happy to announce the upcoming learning opportunity November 4th, 5th and 6th. This event is intended to connect growers, producers, and aspiring food entrepreneurs with a variety of resources to help grow and strengthen their business.
A few of the topics that will be covered on November 4th include; how to take your recipe to market, how to expand to new domestic and international markets, opportunities to access funding, and more. In Addition, a savings program, Dream$avers, will be discussed which is designed to help farmers and fisherman grow their savings and offers a 3-1 match. The event will be formatted as a town hall meeting to not only allow an opportunity for ODA and the Dream$avers Program to share their resources, but also an opportunity for growers and producers to ask direct questions that pertain to their business and get one-on-one access to find creative solutions to the issues they face.
SCDC Executive Director Connie Stopher is encouraging all those interested to take part in this event. “This is a great opportunity for region. We will have experts on nearly every aspect of agriculture here on the South Coast to help our growers and producers in the next phase of their business.”
The town hall event will be taking place on Wednesday November 4th from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Bandon Barn. On Thursday November 5th from 4:00-7:00pm there will be a Farm to School workshop that will help local farmers connect with school food buyers to provide local fresh food to local students. Refreshments and a light snack will be provided to participants.

EOTSC20151031 SWOCC - Volleyball Club

Southwestern Oregon Community College forms Junior Volleyball Club

Southwestern Oregon Community College Head Volleyball Coach, Steve George, has formed a junior girls’ volleyball club for the south coast: Southwestern Volleyball Academy (SWOVA).

SWOVA will put together several teams ranging from 10 to18 year olds. Tryouts are Sunday, November 1, 2015 for the 10 to 14 year old teams. We encourage all young players to try out for the teams.

Practices will be held at the Coos campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay. The season will run from December through May. The goal is to promote youth volleyball and provide training and more experience to develop players at an early age.

Coaching assistance will be provided by current Southwestern volleyball players. This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to give back to the community, and just as important, they will learn more about the game from a different perspective.

More information can be found on the club’s new web site:  SWOVA.CLUB, or contact Head Volleyball Coach, Steve George at (202) 549-3022.
