The “Armchair Film Adventure” series at Coos Bay Public
Library
continues on Tuesday, February 9th at 2:00 p.m. in the Myrtlewood
Meeting Room. A Globe
Trekker visit to Hawai’i is this
month’s
destination.
The Hawai’ian
islands are the most isolated archipelago on the
planet, yet through the development of modern tourism have
become one of
the most heavily visited places on earth. In this isolation a
unique
biodiversity has developed in which 90% of the Hawai’ian
islands flora
and fauna is found nowhere else in the world.
Starting on
the island of Oahu,
this journey takes in surfing on
Waikiki beach, the sport once
reserved for Hawai’ian royalty. Though the
world’s best surfing waves are found on Oahu’s
North Shore
and are not
for beginners, viewing these liquid monsters is awe
inspiring. On
Kauai, there’s kayaking the island’s
largest navigable river and hiking
the amazing Na Pali Coast where plenty of peace and quiet is
found among
the plunging volcanic cliffs that protect deserted beaches.
Other highlights include a spectacular sunrise viewed from
the top of
Maui’s Haleakala Crater
and the remote town of Hana. On Hawai’i,
also
known as The Big Island the newest land in the world is
being formed as
volcanoes pour out lava, and on Kona one can night dive with
gentle
manta rays.
