EOTSC20151106 Reading Matters Week

SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is seeking volunteers.  SMART is a statewide nonprofit organization that pairs caring adult volunteers with thousands of Oregon school children to provide a fun, child-guided experience that builds reading skills, self-confidence and a love of reading in children at risk of falling behind.

SMART is a proven reading program that helps children build self-confidence and an enthusiasm for reading.  We need 300 more volunteers to ensure we can reach the kids who need us with reading support and books to keep.

We invite you to join us for Reading Matters Week, held November 2-7

Volunteers are critical to SMART’s ability to bring the love of reading and learning to thousands of kids across Oregon each year.  To ensure SMART can successfully reach the goal of serving 10,000 students across the State of Oregon with reading support and books to keep in the 2015-16 school year, they are recruiting volunteer readers to read with children at the following sites:

·      Hillcrest Elementary
·      Madison Elementary
·      Blossom Gulch Elementary
·      Lighthouse Elementary

Here’s how you can help:
1)     Sign up to volunteer with SMART for one hour a week from mid-October until mid-May at www.getSMARToregon.org, or call the local office to request a paper application, 541-266-7476.

2)     Sign up to coordinate SMART programs at some of these local schools, to ensure that those children have the opportunity to benefit from having a SMART Reader work with them each week. Log onto our website at www.getSMARToregon.org, or call the local office to request a paper application, 541-266-7476.

3)     SMART staff would love the opportunity to present at your company, professional associations you’re affiliated with, church, book group, etc.  Call us at 541-266-7476to request a SMART presentation at your group meeting.
Thank you for your help. Together, we can create a stronger community by preparing our children for reading and learning success.
