Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Athletic Department will be hosting its first ever swim camp. The camp will be coached by Southwestern Oregon Community College Swimming Staff and Collegiate Athletes.

Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Small Business Development Center (Southwestern SBDC) is pleased to offer a simplified bookkeeping workshop in North Bend
  
Our instructor, Michael Gordon is a CPA who has been providing accounting and tax services since 1978. 

A fee of $45 per person will be charged. Seating is very limited, only the first 25 registrations will be accepted.  Preregistration at www.BizCenter.org is required to insure seating availability and materials.

Logos Players are proud to announce our fall show the Pulitzer Prize
winning "Wit" by Margaret Edson.

Wit is about Professor Vivian Bearing,  an expert on the work of
17th-century British poet John Donne, who has  spent her adult life
contemplating religion and death as literary  motifs.
Diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer, she consents to an
aggressive and experimental form of chemotherapy administered by Dr.
Kelekian and his assistant, Dr. Posner, her former student. Facing
death on a personal level, she reflects on her life and work.

Dinner begins at 6:00 pm and the Show at 7:00 pm - October 2nd & 3rd.

EOTSC20151002 Egyptian Theatre - Gene Melton’s service



The Celebration of Gene Melton’s Life has been scheduled for October 3rd at the Egyptian Theatre. The service will begin at 2:00 pm. Gene was a lifelong resident of Coos Bay. Gene’s love of Coos Bay was evident through his many years of public service. In the 1970’s, Gene served as an Eastside City Councilor, Chief of the Eastside Fire Station, and sixteen years as a reserve police officer for Eastside. Gene also served as a Coos Bay City Councilor from 1992-1994 and 2008-2014. As a City Council member, Gene served as a Council representative on the Boys and Girls Club, Coos Bay Library Board, Egyptian Theatre Preservation - Urban Renewal Agency, South Coast Development Corporation, and countless Council committees.

Ready, Set, Start Your Business


Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Small Business Development Center (Southwestern SBDC) is offering people a chance toexplore their dreams of starting a business. The Southwestern SBDC is offering a workshop titled “Ready Set Start Your Business” each week in October 2015.


The 2-hour workshop provides information on important steps that can contribute to a new venture’s success. Participants learn about licensing, business structure, financing, business planning, personal readiness, business resources and more.  Handouts are informational and provide all the contact information needed to register a business and get started.

The workshop is designed to answer general questions. If, after completing the workshop, you are interested in pursuing your new business idea, the Southwestern SBDC can set you up with a business advisor to discuss specific questions you may have that pertain directly to your venture.  SBDC advising services are free and confidential.

The "Ready Set Start Your Business" workshop is scheduled on a variety of dates and times throughout the month. Participants can choose from any one of the following dates:

EOTSC20150930 Coos County - Tobacco-free campus policy



Coos County Launches Tobacco-Free Campus Policies

Coos County will launch a tobacco-free campus policy October 1, 2015.  The new policy will prohibit cigarettes and all other smoking products, including e-cigarettes and other nicotine delivery products, as well as smokeless tobacco from being used on properties and worksites owned and operated by Coos County.
With guidance and support from county leadership, Coos County will implement the new tobacco-free policy in order to improve the health of area residents, reduce litter, and lessen fire hazards.  Currently, Coos County owns or operates 29 parks and day use areas, 15,000 acres of timber, the Coos County fairgrounds, in addition to offices in Coquille and North Bend.  Smoking will be allowed in campsites with permanent fire rings/pits and a smoking area will be designated at the fairgrounds during fair week.
The use of nicotine replacement therapy, such as gums, lozenges and patches that are approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), will still be permitted at all locations.  For individuals in Coos who are interested in quitting tobacco, the Oregon Tobacco Quit Line provides free counseling, nicotine replacement therapy and educational materials to all Oregonians, regardless of income, insurance status, or legal status.  Call the Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (784-8669) or 1-855-DEJELO-YA (335356-92) for Spanish; or visit www.quitnow.net/oregon.

EOTSC20150930 NBHS - Oklahoma auditions



North Bend High School students have auditions for “Oklahoma” September 30th at 2:30 and October 1 at 3:30 in the music room.  All NBHS students who would like to audition are encouraged to come and be prepared to sing and possibly read a few lines. This show is a community effort. Working with The Liberty Theatre, Ken Graber and Amber Yester are the music directors and Marcia Marchant will be directing the drama part of the show. Many in our community are getting involved. The LTOB is working with NBHS for a successful show coming February 2016.

ODFW Fish Screening Task Force to meet in Salem
SALEM, Ore. - Oregon's Fish Screening Task Force will meet Thursday, Oct. 1 at ODFW Headquarters, 4034 Fairview Industrial Drive SE, Salem, OR 97302. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the agenda includes an update on projects and activities from throughout Oregon.
The ODFW Fish Screening Program coordinates a cost share program for the installation of screens at water diversions. Fish screens prevent the loss of fish when water is used for irrigation, municipal, hydroelectric or other beneficial purposes. The Task Force is appointed by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission and its members represent agricultural, fisheries and public interests.  It meets several times a year to advise the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on fish screening policies and issues.

Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Small Business Development Center (Southwestern SBDC) and the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce announce the launch of the 2015 New Business Challenge grant competition.  The winner will receive $2,500 in accounting services from Hough, Macadam and Wartnick CPA’s; $500 in cash and $500 in taxi topper advertising from Yellow Cab; $1,000 cash from the South Coast Development Council; $900 in banking services from Banner Bank; $500 in cash from Pam de Jong, Financial Advisor, Edward Jones; and a one year chamber membership from the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.  Completed business plans and applications are due in the chamber office by October 9, 2015.
